I have just started using audacity and I am very impresses, untill it came to closing down. I had save a number of MP3 tracks OK but when it comes to saving the remaining work and/or closing down the programme crashes and will not close despite many effforts. The only way to close it is, to open it then close it without using it to edit anything, or close down the computer and restart. Cntr+alt+del does not sucseed. The computer does not jam, I can use other programmes but it slows right down.
I uses win XP and I installed audacity sometime ago I have tried reinstalling with no improvement. Can anyone help out there. N

Click on "Edit > Preferences" and select the "Interface" tab.
Make sure that "Quit Audacity upon closing last window" is selected.

For general information about Audacity file types (Exporting audio, saving projects and so on), see here: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... ement_Tips

Thank you for that reply. That did not solve this problem. The "Quit Audacity upon closing last window" was already ticked. I have had some sucsess working with files (MP3). I only seem to have the problems with crashing when am working au files. 512kb RAM, would the size of file I work with be a problem.

What do you mean "au" files? You're not trying to directly work with the files in the project data folder are you?

i've been working with audacity for a few months, tracking an album project. i love the ease of use. i tried cakewalk, and it seemed way too complex.

my problem is that, as of late, it'll shut down in the middle of my work session, giving me a message of "audacity has encountered a problem and needs to close". it's doing this over and over, about 5 times in one 1 1/2 hour session today! i tried going to a differant song, still crashed. i cleaned up my hard drive and emptied the trash, just in case it needed more room to run, and it still crashed. it's done this on both my desktop and my laptop today, so it's not a computer issue.

help!

That is a generic Windows error message - it means "oops, something is wrong!" Although Microsoft are firmly placing the blame on the application that has crashed, it is not necessarily the fault of that application - it could be just about anything.

Since Audacity was previously working, but now isn't, something must have changed. The thing is to try and work out what has changed, and then fix that.

Can you narrow that down at all? was it working a week ago? a month ago?
There may have been an update to your system - Windows Update? Anti-virus update?
Have you installed any new software?
It may be worth trying a "system restore" to a time before the problem appeared.

Hard disks filling up does not only reduce the available disk space, but also increases disk fragmentation (which can be very bad for audio programs). As well as making more drive space you may need to defragment your drive (this can take a long time).
