I frequently use my turntable just to play records, without recording anything. My problem is that the sound is pretty muddy, and I don't think there is an equalizer in Audacity for just playing records, is there? How can I get around this?
Another problem is the slight delay of Audacity sound compared to the turntable sound. In other words, first I hear a quiet sound coming out of the turntable, then a split second later the louder sound coming out of my speakers. This is pretty disturbing when I play classical music. Any suggestions?

Audacity doesn't do anything in real time, so no, it can't apply an equalizer filter during capture or playthrough. It's perfectly happy to capture your vinyl and apply filters in post production.

Audacity still doesn't do anything in real time. "Latency" is what happens when a sound computer has to stop for a second and think about what it's doing. It's the reason analog sound equipment didn't abruptly vanish when the digital stuff came on line. Analog equipment doesn't have the latency that drives artistic performers nuts.

You can mess with Preferences > Audio I/O > Software Playthrough or Hardware Playthrough. Those are the tools intended to do what you want. You may need to restart Audacity between settings.
