Can't get to first base

Sorry to ask something so elementary ~ but I get an error message whenever I hit record: "Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate."
I'm trying to record from my four track using line out to headphone jack, but obviously it doesn't recognise it as an input.
I have attempted every input setting, to no avail.
I'm using windows vista.
Any ideas?
