editing 2 performance recordings into one

I recently recorded 2 identical evening performances (a Music Revue) for our Arts Council. The same 20 songs were performed each night. I would like to create a recording of the Revue that chooses the best performance of each song. I have imported both into a file together, but am finding it difficult to discover the best/easiest way to splice the two together. Because it was live, of course, the times vary for each tune. I would think it would be easy if there was a way to "insert" a selected region of one track into another, but I do not see that choice listed. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've been known to Select, Copy and Paste. Audacity sees a "Paste" as an insert edit and the new tune should just elbow everything else out of the way.

Thanks, Koz. Following your suggestion I found that you first need to "generate silence" at the insertion (paste) point for any length to paste the copy into, then cut the excess silence after pasting. When selecting a paste point without silence, my edits just placed the new sounds on top of the old, yielding a cacophany of sound. With even a little "silence" in which to paste the copy, the edit went well.

Thanks for your input!
