Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

"Advanced audio coding file" error

Post by pebah » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:43 am

Certain files in itunes bring up the error message "(filename) is an Advanced Audio Coding file. Audacity cannot open this type of file. You need to convert it to a supported format"

I have been able to edit other files so I guess it has something to do with the original recording? Can anyone reccommend a program to convert the files? What file type are they now and what do they need to be converted to?

Thank you for any help.

AAC is Apple's proprietary format - and most AAC files aslo have DRM (Digital Rights Management) embedded in them to prevent/inhibit copying. As you have Audacity cannot operate on these files.

You should be able readily to find a converter, try googling " AAC to WAV" or "AAC to MP3" - actually even iTunes can be made to do this for you, though the process is a little more complicated than finding and using a simple converter.

Another option is to play the file either in iTunes on your PC, or on your iPod plugged to the line-in on your PC, and record the tracks in Audacity.
