newbie with audacity and creating karaoke songs from mp3

Post by dabunny » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:46 pm

Hello everyone

I'm trying to create a cd+g from a mp3 using this program but am getting frustrated.

Is there a step by step guide to help me create a karaoke song from an existing mp3.

Also, why on some songs when I do the vocal remove they don't remove?

Thank you

Audacity is just an audio editor - it does not directly support CD+G
You can edit your audio in Audacity, but for the CD+G part you will need other software.

"Vocal removal" is also called "centre pan removal". It removes sound that is panned dead centre in the mix - that is, it is identical on both left and right channels. It will often not work with MP3's because they frequently mess up the stereo separation. Also, many tracks use reverb and echoes of the vocal that are panned left and right, which will not be removed.

There are three packages that do tricks like this. Center Pan Remover is available for free from the downloadable tools. Sometimes you can get the tools to do both isolate and remove.

Center Pan Remover (Voice Remover--Search the page for "Center Pan Remover")

Voice Isolator (Opposite of Center Pan Remover)
Voice Trap

Extra Boy

Most of the time the tools fail. There is a long list of conditions that need to be met to get rid of a singer from a song. The show has to be in stereo, the singer has to be in the middle, the show must not have echo or reverb, the show can not be highly compressed, etc. etc.

The software isn't actually looking for a voice. It's taking action based on what it finds in a particular spot in the left to right sound field. If the singer, the drums and the bass are all in the middle, they will all vanish. If none of the performers are in the middle, nothing will happen.
