Hey, Mantas here,

This was a head scratcher for me too. I want to point out that I found the Device Driver for my soundcard by going to Start/Control Panel, and lo and behold (DUH! on me) that the actual sound device vendor had an icon. Inside there was the option to deal with Noise Suppression. With that unchecked, smooth sailing!

FYI - I used a work PC that had a SoundMax card (SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio) if that helps other users, so much the better, because I was getting mega frustrated until I found this forum!

Happy Recording, bro's & sis's
Mantas

Re:Vista Microphone FADES OUT automatically

microphone sound fades out on its own in Vista. I went crazy trying to find a solution, even bought a new microphone, Registrybooster program and "fixed" like 800 errors (do you believe it?) scourged all boards and forums got skype help personal reply... to no avail, until I found this kind person's suggestion:
i went to my Realtech audio manager, the noise suppression was already unchecked, so I unchecked the echo cancellation and ... voila! it got fixed. I subscribed to this board especially to make this solution available to others as there is nothing else out there on this issue.
Vista microphone sound fades out automatically after a few seconds.

As with the previous post, I noticed an icon for my Realtek card in the systems tray next to the volume control icon. Opening that, I found that a 'microphone' tab. Selecting that displayed various options, one of which, 'Noise suppression', was selected. I de-selected it, and got no fading.
I realize that this isn't strictly an Audacity problem, and the thread is old, but I've experienced the same problem on a new computer running Windows 7, with a Realtek sound card. If I play a note longer than about 2.5 seconds on the flute, or even sing it with my voice, the sound fades out. De-selecting "noise suppression" fixes the problem, but creates a new one: a noisy track! With "noise suppression" deselected, there's an appreciable amount of background hiss/fuzz, even though my recording environment is silent. This forces me to use Audacity's noise removal, which I'd prefer not to do, since it entails at least some degradation in the quality of the recorded sound. Is this strictly a Windows problem, or is it specific to certain hardware?

The noise is due to the hardware. It costs money to build a quiet microphone pre-amp, but because everyone is looking to get maximum bang for their buck, the manufacturers allocate around 7 cents for the sound card. The problems with "noise suppression" is due to the sound card drivers - they are using software to try and cover up how bad the sound card is. The only real solution is to upgrade the sound card.
