Cannot set / adjust input Level

Using Stable. I cannot adjust input "Level " (and output level) on mixer toolbar. The slider does not respond or move, even after clicking on "monitor input" of drop menu for input toolbar. I am running Vista. I am not running a USB device but an RCA cable from Amplifier to line in of computer.
Thanks for any help, toniP

Are you, by any chance, using a USB device for input?

The mixer toolbar is a tool of convenience when it is supported by the operating system and sound card driver. That usually excludes USB audio devices and Vista, but can also mean other sound cards on other systems. If the mixer toolbar does not work, just hide it (so it doesn't bug you) and use the Windows Mixer instead.
