Not Recording

Hi, I have Windows Vista Ultimate and when
I try to record with audacity I will open up the program, but it does not show the usual
gray box to the left where you can turn up the sound, etc. and when I press record the marker that moves to show you
where you are on the timeline just blinks and stays at 0:00, it does not record at all.
