"Can't Open File" error after click removal

I'm getting an error after processing a recorded file. The error wipes out the recording, and persists into the next recording I try to make.

I recorded off a vinyl LP using the Numark USB turntable; everything went fine. I then did 'noise removal' which went fine, and then 'click removal'. That's been my standard process in the past. When it was all done with the click removal, I got the following error:

'can't open file 'C:DOCUME~1PeterLOCALS~1Tempaudacity_1_2_temp|b01243au'(error 3: the system cannot find the path specified.)

I tried it again without exiting the program or rebooting and, as soon the the recording started, I got the same message. I think it's happening multiple times because: 1) when I click 'details' on the error window I see lots of instances, and 2) when I click 'OK' on the error window it just pops up again, and the file up until that moment goes to a flat line.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You left out a step or two.

"I recorded an album and after I succeeded, I immediately Exported As WAV to get a stable, stand-alone, high quality sound file suitable for further editing and cleaning later. Then I did it all again to the next album."

"Later that day, I opened up the WAV files one at a time, cleaned them up and exported them as new WAV files or MP3 files for my iPod."

If you didn't export even once during the whole process, then what you have are Audacity Capture Projects. Audacity Projects in general are suitable for fast. efficient, complex editing and production, but they're also brittle, complicated, hard to move, and easily damaged. Many times when they get damaged, it's permanent.

So you may have a damaged project--or two. Projects are not sound files. They can be collections of thousands of capture clips, effects fragments, and other files. The only way to get a single sound file is Export.

You could be filling up your hard drive. Seriously nasty things start happening when Programs, not just Audacity tries to save stuff to the hard drive and they can't.

Waveforms and Graphics are separate events and files in Audacity. It's perfectly possible to have a damaged project and silent waveforms.
