Audacity Stops Recording after <1sec

I installed Audacity along with my Numark TTUSB turntable to copy lots of vinyl. Everything was working great, until my hard drive died, and I had to restore everything. I had somehow upgraded my XPHome OS to XPPro, but couldn't find the upgrade when I restored so I'm back to XPHome. At any rate, now, when I start recording, if I use the Windows sound setup I get perhaps a half-second of recording before the graphing stops and sound dies out. If use any of the other I/O preferences (Bluetooth audio, USB, the Conextant sound card native to my laptop) I get nothing. I don't know how it was set before the meltdown -- I never had a problem so I didn't check.

Any help would be appreciated.

Could be a duff USB port. You have plugged it not direct to a USB port on your PC, right? USB hubs often give lots of trouble.

The trouble is that once the USB connection breaks ot stays broken - which is why it starts off ok and then flatlines. Try a different USB port - or if you only have the one try replugging and rebooting. Make sure the USB plug is seated correctly. It may of course be a bad USB plug or USB cable on your ION.

If all else fails you may be able to go the analog route - many ION TTs have analog outputs as well as the USB. If so make sure the ION is set to Line level (and not phono) and plug it into the line level input on your PC (NOT the mic input) - you will need a RCA phono pair to 3.5mm TRS stereo jack for this (easy to source - and you may have one already).

With no offense intended, you da' man! :D Who-da thunk? Works great again, and I'll decide if I need to replace the USB port.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your high praise - but thanks is really due to Gale Andrews (one of the developers) who responded to a similar problem recently and gave a good analytical reply to the problem. I am merely the sponge that soaked up the info from that posting and wrung it out again to pass on when needed ...

Glad you got it working again.
