Help - I cannot control the recording levels

Hi:

I’m a new user trying to use iMic to record lps etc. onto my Dell D600 laptop with Windows XP Professional.

For some reason the recording level slider bar is unresponsive – i.e., I cannot control the recording levels. Any ideas why this is?

Thanks in advance!

Did any software come with it? When you plug an iMic into a Mac, they hold hands and just start working. On a PC, you might need driver software or update your Windows System software.

Do you have the switches on the iMic set right? The older units had a Mic/Line level switch.

No sftware came with the iMic (I do not think it needs any). The PC recognizes it and I am able to select it as the recording device in the Windows audio control pannel and in the Audacity preferences. I can hear the source (music) and see recording levels, but I cannot control the recording levels.

Is it possibly because the iMic is a USB device and Audacity cannot control recording levels from a USB input?

Yes, I believe this is the case. When you plug in a USB device like this Audacity hands over control of the sound services, including the signal level, to the USB device. Some USB devices have a gain control to manage the signal level (the Edirol UA-1EX that I use does) but some do not.
