Cannot hear tracks while recording

I have been through all the on-line FAQs on this subject and I can not get any joy. When trying to select my PC's internal sound card on the playback options, I have 3 choices. 1: Microsoft Sound Mapper (I know it's not that one). 2: Speakers USB Audio CODEC (my turntable has no speakers of its own so don't think it's that one). 3: Speakers Realtek High Definition (have selected this one but it still doesn't work). Any thoughts?

try going to Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O and ensure that the radio button for Software Playthrough is checked on.
Also since you have plugged in a USB device the entire audio services have been handed over to the USB device - and as you observe the usb tt has no speakers. So you wil need to go to the windows control panel to Sounds & Audio Devices > Audio Sound > Playback and retarget the output onto your internal PC sound card. And do the same in Audacity with Edit > Preference > Playback

Software playthrough button is checked.
Windows Vista does not have the control panel options that you mention. However, I have checked the Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio box in the Sound Playback window. The icon shows that these are working and I have checked in the Test screen for them. Still no joy
