Volume upon playback is very quiet.

First, Thank you for reading this.
I just very recently decided to start recording what I play on guitar with some upgraded equipment. Before I used a webcam. I went out and bought an APEX460 microphone the other day and am having trouble setting it up.
The Problem:
After I record things using audacity the recorded volume is very very low. When I play the song I record and then another song side by side the audacity recording's volume is nothing compared to the other. AKA, in order to hear my song you have to crank up the volume. Once you do it's fine, but i don't think you should have to do this. If I burnt my songs onto a CD with other downloaded songs then a person would have to crank up the volume for my song and then turn it way down again for the downloaded song so they don't blow their speakers.... I don't want that.
When I record, I record me singing and playing on acoustic guitar all at once, one track. I have the mic about 12 inches away from my face when I sing and strum. I'm using an M-audio MobilePreUSB pre-amp which I received from a friend. When I turn up the "gain" on the preamp the audio is distorted upon playback.
Information about the mic:
The 460 offers an S/N ratio of 76 dB and a self-noise of 20 dB (A). The power supply carries an on/off rocker switch, IEC cable input and voltage selector on the back; on the front are a 7-pin XLR input and a standard 3-pin XLR.
Patterns are switched in nine increments between omni on the left and figure-8 on the right via a rotary knob, which is also on the power supply's front panel.
