using effects leads to audacity closing
Hi, new user getting to grips with audacity.
all was fine with early recordings until I downloaded freeverb and stuck it in the plugins folder. It appeared in the effects menu (so I think I did that bit right) but since then, every time I try to apply ANY effect, I get a message saying that Audacity encountered a problem and needs to close down. Any ideas why and/or how to fix this?
Thanks,
Hobbes

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
If it IS freeverb that is causing the problem, simply delete the freeverb file from your plug-ins folder.

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
tried deleting freeverb, used gverb... no joy - audacity still encountered a problem and shutdown. previews of effects work fine though (as they did before). Any other suggestions? Anyone else encountered this problem?
Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
Well that establishes that it is not freeverb causing the problem.Hobbes wrote:tried deleting freeverb, used gverb... no joy - audacity still encountered a problem and shutdown.
Have you manually installed any other plug-ins? There can be problems with the VST enabler if you have any incompatible VST effects on your computer (including VST effects installed in other audio programs).
Other than that, you can try doing a fresh install of Audacity. In order to do a fresh install, it is necessary to also reset Audacity's preferences and delete the Audacity folder that is in "Program Files" before reinstalling. Instructions of how to reset Audacities preferences are in the link below. In fact, it may be worth just resetting the preferences and see if that fixes it, as a misconfiguration in the preferences can cause these sort of problems.

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
thanks for the prompt replies:
the only other things I had added were the VST bridge and two effects (freeverb and a telephone effect), as well as the LADSPA package.
Tried the fresh install, have not re-plugged any extras, still no joy! arrrgghhhh!

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
me again:
I've been playing around and realised that the effects cause shutdown only when I use them on a copied and pasted track. when I use them on an originally recorded track, the effects work fine. This is good because at least I can use the effects, but it does suck because it would be nice to have a seperate 'wet' effect track to use in mixing.
to copy and paste the track I copied the whole track, then created a new audio track, then pasted it in. I also had to time shift it slightly to sync the copied with the original vocal track. Don't know if I'm doing things wrong or if this is a known problem. Any way around it?
Thanks for the help so far

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
I;m unsure why you are getting this problem, it seems quite unexpected. However, a possible workaround (and this works better than copy and pasting anyway. Select a track (or part) and press Ctrl+D to duplicate it.

Re: using effects leads to audacity closing
thanks for the duplicate tip - seems to have solved the problem! effects on duplicated track DO NOT shut the whole shebang down!!
