Thanks for the quick reply... but I have not changed any of the settings in Sounds and Audio Devices - they all still point to Realtek HD Audio like they always did. Did I miss something there?

Try disconnecting your USB sound card and rebooting the computer. What happens?

Sorry I should have been more specific about my setup - it's a laptop (Acer TravelMate 6292). I didn't have any USB attachments at the time this happened except a USB mouse. My headphones were also plugged in. Let me know if you need any more info. Thanks for the help.

OK, so it is a completely different problem to the USB issue that was being discussed in this thread.
So basically you were fiddling with some sound settings and then all of your sound went off and you cannot get it back on?
I presume that you laptop also has internal speakers that (previously) operated when your headphones are disconnected?
Are you still without sound if you disconnect your headphones?
How much detail can you remember about what you were doing when the sound went off?

OK I uninstalled Audacity, rebooted and the sound came back. Thanks for your help.
In case you wanna investigate the bug though, here are the details you asked about
1. I was fiddling with the mic volume level while a track was playing. As soon as I moved the mic volume higher, the sound went off (this was the first time that I had touched the mic volume).
2. Yes, the sound was gone with and without the headphones.
Let me know if you want any more details.

This happened to me as well. Deinstalling Audacity did not turn the sound back on either. After finding the solution to fix this, I think what happened is adjusting the sound volume in Audacity adjusted my sound card volume to 0. To fix it I needed to go to the Control Panel then in Sounds and Audio Devices and then in the Volume Panel I had to click on Advanced Settings for my sound card to bring up the mixer where I could change the volume that was at 0. Afterwards I had no problems with Audacity and the soundcard.
