lost file after stop and then record button pressed

I have been recording questions to myself all weekend by clicking pause off and on while in record mode (name three types of diuretics, etc.). I clicked the stop button by mistake and then when I tried clicking pause/record I lost the file. Audacity closed and I don't know if the file is still available. Audacity shows I have 2 hours less than I did before so I wonder if there is an .au file somewhere? Any help is appreciated. I tried manual recovery but I don't know where to look for the lost file.
