Problem recording with Vista

I use audacity on my friends laptop that has XP and it works fine. I Use the same mic. When i record on my pc I get fuzzy noise on the playback. The volume is low despite having mic input turned all the way up. When I amplify it, the fuzzy noise only gets worse. I have selected the stereo mix on the control panel and this does not work. Any ideas?
