Indeed poor you with Vista - I insisted that Dell "downgraded" my new laptop to XP-Pro !

I therefore have no experience with vista but you may find help on these pages from the Audacity Wiki:

My suspicion is that you need to change some settings in the Windows Mixer (see waxcylinder's second link).
When you have selected "Stereo Mix" as the recording source, all unused inputs (microphone, CD, Aux, Line in, ...) should be muted otherwise they will add noise to the recording. "Stereo Mix" will record ALL sounds that are going through your sound card, not just the sounds that are generated within the computer, therefore unused inputs must be turned down or off (muted).

Hi there.
I have only just joined and I don't know very much about anything as this is my first attempt at editing music.
However, I am writing to say that I have downloaded Audacity to Vista - and apart from my own inexpertise, it seems to be working o.k.
I haven't recorded any cd's yet, but I have copied some audio cassettes to my pc and they have turned out o.k. except for some background noise which I am working on.
