APPCRASH

I have done a clean install of vista on a new blank HD on my Dell Dimension 5100. I installed Audacity and it appeared to work, i.e. would produce recorded waveform traces on screen, but because there were no driver for my old sound card, I was unable to hear anything. I replaced the sound card with a creative SB X-Fi card, downloaded the latest drivers etc, and it works fine.
However Audacity refuses to load and gives error message "application has stopped working, APPCRASH". Ihave tried uninstalling and reinstalling a fresh download of v. 1.2.6. to no avail, can anyone help please.

You may need to reset the preferences in Audacity.
