Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Autodetect LAME library

Post by nae1986 » Mon Oct 13, 2008 3:04 am

In Audacity, I export my recordings to MP3 using the LAME library. Everytime I install it, I have to go to the Preferences menu and show the path to the library. It's always in "AudacityPlug-ins" directory.
Since it is the default place to put plugins, could Audacity automatically detect if the LAME library is in the "Plug-ins"?

LAME is a bit different to other plug-ins (such as effects plug-ins).
If you put it in the main Audacity program folder instead of the plug-ins folder, it will probably be detected automatically. (seems to work with Audacity 1.3.x anyway).

Autodetection won't work in Audacity 1.2.x, but if you need to update the binary LAME file that Audacity uses, you should be able to just overwrite it with the same name in the existing location where Audacity looks for it. Autodetection should work in 1.3.x on Windows and Linux if you put the binary in Audacity's Plug-Ins folder or a common system library. I don't know for sure if it works on Mac.
