Help with equalization/compression?

so i'm trying to make a ringtone for my phone. i can shorten and export it and all that, it's just when i hear it on my phone it sounds like i just recorded it off the radio or something. i read the tutorial on the wiki part of this site, and it said to change the equalization and compression. thing is, i don't know much about that, and the article doesnt explain very well. so how can i fix this? thankss
