Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Downloading and saving BBC 7 programmes

Post by dickymint » Tue Oct 07, 2008 9:34 am

I Use Windows XP. I want to save the BBC radio stream on her computer [download rm file from BBC and then convert real audio to mp3]. I downloaded Audacity v1.2.6. I Started Audacity and choose View -> Float Mixer Toolbar. In the drop-down menu on Audacity's mixer toolbar, tried to choose "Wave Out" or "Stereo Mix" as the input source. Thgese options do not appear to be available. How do I proceed?

The input sources you get are entirely dependent on your soundcard and its associated device drivers. See this page in the wiki for more detail: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... e_computer. My desktop PC won't do it - my new laptop does it fine - they just vary ....

One work-around would be to buy ann external USB soundcard and loop back it's outputs to its inputs.

Many thanks for the instant advice. Installing Audacity on my Sony VA10 laptop enables me to record and save the desired programme. I have to export it as a .wav as I don't seem to be able to export it directly as .mp3. This is not a problem however. The recorded broadcast sounds a bit "tinny". Can I do something about this please?

BBC7 broadcast digitally compressed audio (they do this to fit more channels into the digital spectrum) and the file you have downloaded will also be compressed - if you the compress this further to MP3 you will increase the compression and it will sound worse - you will get digital artifacts
