Hi Morbido,

What you describe is most likely because at the operating system (Windows) mixer you need to explicitly SELECT as Recording device "What you hear", or "Stereo Mix", or something like that.

In Audacity, what is not grayed out, is pretty much what that master is currently selected to.

Remember it's the Master Mixer (operating system's) needs to be set so Audacity gets it from there. Audacity is like a 'tape recorder' and can only see what's available from the Mixer.

Some sound cards come with their special mixer, which is mostly the same as the original System's mixer, but may have more features, corresponding to the special driver that they install.

You can access the master mixer by right-click on the Speaker Icon.

Good luck.

Well, try Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices. There find options for Audio - SOUND recording and select the device that you want the mixer to send to Audacity as a the deivice to be recorded. In Audacity, you may need to also make sure that it is changed to be the same. In Audacity, about 4 lines from the top, there's a box with a down arrow where you can select "microphone" or "stereo mix (or What you Hear), or other available recordable inputs. Usually default is "microphone", change it to what you specified in the Windows Mixer.

If you have a special sound card (add-on) it may have its own Mixer, which replaces the Windows mixer, but it's the same principle.
