When you say "it still doesn't work" - is it exactly the same as before?
(i.e. recording at a very low level).

I've got some information missing here, but I'm not sure what - it's like trying to do a jigsaw without all the pieces - not your fault, I'm sure you are trying

Hi Steve..Further to my last missive, I'm pretty certain that the problem lies with my sound card. I've tried to record a track from a cd using audio grabber and I get the same thing happen (or doesn't!).. Luckily, my Pc is still under warranty until 17.1.09 so I've got an engineer coming out on Thurday to have a look see. Many thanks for all your assistance and I'll let you know the final verdict in due course....Stev,Malvern,England.
