No mic input?

Post by retroboy » Sat Oct 04, 2008 1:29 am

Hi guys, I have a problem. I'm testing out Audacity and I'm trying to test the microphone. Problem is, the program doesn't seem to pick it up. I don't see why this is happening, since it works just fine when I record using the thing that comes already installed on the computer. I've tried everything from changing the bar near the volume controls to microphone and even tried following the instructions on the faq, but no dice.
I use Sound Blaster Audigy Audio A400 and I've been trying to mess around in the control panel, but it still won't work. Help!

Give us a clue here - what is "the thing" that comes already installed

Sorry, work with me here, I sometimes don't come out clear.
Anyway, I meant the tool that you can find when you go into accessories and then entertainment, it's the sound recorder that I assume came with the computer. My mic works fine when I use this, but not audacity.

Go into the Audacity preferences (Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O) and select "Microsoft Sound Mapper" for both input and output.

UPDATE: I just tried the Windows built in sound recorder. I thought it was working but it isn't either. I officially think it's a problem with my mic. Does anyone know if it might have anything to do with whether the mic is plugged into the back of the computer and if it might work better if I get a USB converter plug for my mic?

It sounds like you may have a bad microphone lead.
Is it just an ordinary computer microphone that you are using?

Can you test the microphone out on another computer?

Can you borrow a microphone to try?

It would be helpful if we can narrow down the problem, otherwise we will probably end up chasing red herrings.
