No Sound In itunes after export to Mp3

When I export a file to mp3 format (or any other type of format) I can't hear the file. I'm trying to play it in itunes. I've tried many different variables, nothing works.

I've already downloaded the LAME MP3 encoder, and believe everything runs smoothly during the export process. Furthermore the Mp3 file will play sound if played in Audacity 1.3.3 but not other devices (i.e. itunes)

Any thoughts?

Audacity doesn't actually play the MP3 - it imports it and turns it into an Audacity project(but it's a good sign that you can do that and play it).

Can you play the file in WMP (Windows Media Player)?

A thought: have you by any chance pluuged in a USB audio device? If so this may be the cause of the problem. Devices like USB turntables and USB mics can often take over the entire audio services and as they have no playback capabilkity no sound can be heard. To correct this you can go to the Windows Control Panel and reset the sound output to be targetted on your onboard sondcard.
