No playback from Audacity

**I copied this in from the "Unstable" forum when I realized I had posted it there by accident*

I have a strange problem. I'm running Vista, which I'd suspect as the issue, but it worked fine for a while and then all of a sudden the problem cropped up.

In a nutshell: I can record, see the waveform, apply filters, etc. However, when I try to play the recording I hear nothing at all. I've tried all of the playback devices in preferences and still no luck. Also, my volume slider in audacity is maxed. If I export the recording from audacity to a .wav file it plays fine. Input = A OK. Output = borked......but from Audacity only.

Anyone have any ideas?

Yes, I suspect it is as well.

Apparently Vista has "Improved audio controls allow the system-wide volume or volume of individual audio devices and even individual applications to be controlled separately."

Look in the Windows Control Panel - Right-click over the speaker icon in the System Tray > Recording Devices. Or click Start > Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound (if you're using "Classic View" there's a direct link to "Sound" in the Control Panel), then click on the "Playback" tab.

Is there something in there that is causing the issue?

Sorry I can't help more, but I don't use Vista. This problem has come up before, so if you find the solution I'm sure it would help others if you could post your solution.

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything there to help. Anyone else have a tip? I don't think I'd been anywhere near the sound control panel when this problem popped up.

Well, this has to be a Vista issue. I uninstalled Audacity, deleted the registry entries for audacity, downloaded a fresh copy of Audacity and reinstalled. Still no luck. Unfortunately, there's no obvious problem.

Whee, I love Windows!
