saved file does not open

I'm having no luck opening a saved file. I saved it first as an aup file and then converted it to a wav file - both of which seemed to work fine. But then when I went to open the aup file to delete some of the intro noise, I can't open the file at all. It shows the file as being open, but there is no access to the file at all - I can't do anything to play or edit the file at all. Any help would be most appreciated.
