Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

AUP file not created

Post by antolenno » Tue Sep 16, 2008 5:22 am

Just a quick question, I have installed Audacity version 1.2.6 on a windows xp sp3 machine and just runnng some tests at the moment, One issue I have come accross is, sometimes when I save a project before I beging to record, Choosing File Save Project As for example (Test.aup). The Aup file is not in fact created, if I begin to record it will in fact create the ..._data folder but the AUP file has not been created.
Have you ever come accross this problem before?? I have been searcing the audacity help on the internet and have found one other person with the same problem but there wasnt any solution.
Just thought I'd ask??
Thank you

I find it better to Save the Project as an empty project prior to starting any recording.

The advantage of this approach is that Audacity does then not use its temporary file area to store the project (and then subsequently copy from the temp area to your specified file location) - instead it writes them directly to your desired location.

And many thanks to Stevethefiddle for this valuable tip.

I have tried to do this also, by saving an empty project, but the aup file is not created when i go search for it.

As far as I know, you are the first and only person with this problem. I've read literally thousands of posts on this forum, and not come across this before.

Try following these instructions exactly and see what happens:
  • First create a folder on your desktop and name it "AudacityTest" (without quotes).
  • Open Audacity
  • Select "Save As" from the "File Menu" - unless you have permanently cancelled the warning, you will get a pop up message saying that you are saving an "Audacity Project". If you get this pop-up, read the message and then click on OK.
  • You will then get a browser window pop up.
  • In the file browser, navigate to "AudacityTest"
  • In the "File Name" text box, type "test" (without quotes), and then click on "Save"
  • Now minimise Audacity and find the folder "AudacityTest" and open it. Inside it you should have a file called "test" or "test.aup" (depending on whether you have file extensions hidden) and a folder called "test_data"
