Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

oleaut32.dll file access issue

Post by Mr_Ada » Mon Sep 08, 2008 3:48 am

I have been using Audacity for some time now and recently I have been unable to get it to work. Something about oleaut32.dll

I get this error signature from windows:
AppName: audacity.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: oleaut32.dll
ModVer: 5.2.3790.4202 Offset: 0001ad24

Going to Event viewer I get this:
Faulting application audacity.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module oleaut32.dll, version 5.2.3790.4202, fault address 0x0001ad24.

Anyone have this problem?

I current have a windows xp 64 bit system.

Sorry Chris I have no clue either.

But this is curiously similar to the behaviour of my old copy of Lotus Organizer which has travelled quite happily from PC to PC over the years (including those at places where I was employed where the IT folks had 'em really locked down). But on my latest DELL Laptop with XP-PRO-SP3, although it will load and start up and be availabe for reading, as soon as I try to edit or create an entry it falls over complaining about a .dll file fault. Several days of trawling t'interweb failed to yield a solution for me .... :(

oleaut32.dll is part of Windows OLE system (Object Linking and Embedding) and is used all over the place in Windows.

If you are only getting this problem with Audacity, then it is probably an incompatibility problem with your version of Windows, in which case you could try a different version of Audacity (Note that Vista had not been invented when Audacity 1.2 was released).

If you get similar errors with other applications, then you could have a corrupt oleaut32.dll, but I've no idea how you would fix that on Vista. (Perhaps a System Restore to a point before the problem appeared?)

No longer can't get audacity to work

Post by Mr_Ada » Fri Sep 12, 2008 5:59 am

I was working fine with Audacity now for a year (stable version) and as of a few days ago I get this weird oleaut32.dll error and even reinstalling the application doesn't help make it work.

Anyone have this problem? Any solutions to try?

Is this on Vista?

I have windows xp 64 (not vista) and this program has worked fine for a long time until recently. I cleared out all of my restore points because i was getting weird PCK kind of error and I suspect I have a weird malware virus. Don't know if that would corrupt that file though, might. Also I wouldn't know how to get a replacement version of that file. Every time I delete it, it comes back.

Download and run AVAST antivirus (free) and let it do a full virus scan (this is the default option when you install). Then update the virus definitions and scan again (full boot time scan). This will take some time, but will ensure that you have a clean machine before you start investigating further. (if you have some other anti-virus program on your machine, you may need to temporarily disable it while you are running AVAST. You can uninstall AVAST when you have finished if you prefer some other anti-virus product).

Have you installed Service Pack 3?
I ask because there was a similar problem recently, and I'm wondering if the problem relates to a recently updated version of oleaut32.dll

Perhaps this may be relevant: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943172/en-us

If Microsoft have released a version of oleaut32.dll that is incompatible with Audacity 1.2.6, try Audacity 1.3.5 and see if that works.

I'll check on what I have installed when I get home tonight. I have both versions of audacity and neither works right now.
