Cannot open .wav or .mp3 with Audacity after upgrade

Now, I can open up any supported file type just fine from within Audacity. And I can open up .aup files just fine by double-clicking. But when I try to right-click on a .wav or .mp3 (haven't tried other formats) and "Open With", and then try to choose audacity.exe as the opening program, it just goes back to the "Open With" dialog, and doesn't even add Audacity to the list, at all.

I previously had 1.2.6 installed on this machine, and I uninstalled it before installing 1.3.5. On another machine which has never had Audacity installed on here at all, I can do the above with no problems at all.

Please advise?

Your Windows file associations are scrambled.

.DOC = Word for Windows
.PUB = Microsoft Publisher
.PSD = PhotoShop

Consult your Windows instructions or wait for one of the Windows helpers here. I used to know how to fix that.....

For the record, uninstalling, then going through the registry and removing every reference to "audacity", and then reinstalling, seems to have worked.

Not everyone may know how to do this, however.

And you only have to do that in 1.2. 1.3 and any Audacity version on any other platform keeps preferences in a neat preference file suitable for trashing.

Only 1.2-Windows made the mistake of putting preferences in the Dreaded Windows Registry.

Yep, I had done that. The problem was that after I selected audacity.exe, it was as if I had hit the Cancel button instead. The "Open With" dialog had no indication that I had ever even navigated to and selected audacity. It didn't show up in the programs list, etc. Selecting the "Always use the selected program..." button would have been pointless, as there was no program selected at all.

Have a look in C:Program Files and check that you have Audacity installed where you think it is installed. Note that by default the installation folder for Audacity 1.3.x is different from Audacity 1.2.x
