Echo coming from turntable as I'm recording

I'm new to Audacity and don't know all the buzzwords, but I need help. My first recording went really well and I was really excited about being able to record my LP into the computer. But when I tried it again with different LP I heard an echo when the record was playing, like the song was playing twice, with only a second or two delay.

What could be happening? Should I uninstall and reinstall Audacity? If I do will I have to reconfigure my computer again?

I'm running Windows Vista, if that makes a difference!

It's possible to mess up the live sound monitoring on a Windows machine but still get a good recording. Did you get a good recording?

Actually, yes. I didn't record the whole song, just the first 30 or 45 seconds, but when I played it back it was alright.

You can dig in the Windows Sound Panels and turn off anything you're not using--like Mix Out, or What You Hear. Those can cause an echo.

If you're in Vista, that's a whole different problem.
