No sound in Audacity 1.3

Post by onionmaster » Fri Dec 02, 2011 12:50 pm

Recently, the sound completely disappeared from Audacity 1.3. Have tried changing speaker settings, going for a different build of the program, but nothing works. This happened shortly after sound stopped working in Internet Explorer, yet it works in every other program apart from those two. Have installed the latest build, but no such luck.

What's weird about this is that I also have 1.2 installed and the sound works fine in that.

1.3 has a lot of plug ins that aren't possible to use in previous versions, so it would be really good if there is a way of sorting this out.

I did check the various tutorials/FAQs, but didn't notice an answer to my problem.

Thanks if anyone can help me,
-Mike

Open Audacity 1.2 and go to "Edit menu > Preferences > Audio I/O"
What options are set there?

Close Audacity 1.2 and open Audacity 1.3.13 (is this the version of 1.3. that you have? If not you should update from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/ To check the current version, look in Help > About Audacity)

In Audacity 1.3.13, go to "Edit > Preferences > Devices". What options are set and what are the other available options?

The builds I have installed are Audacity 1.26 final and Audacity 1.3.13 beta.

In 1.26, the playback device is: Speakers (Realtek High Definition)
the recording device is: Stereo Mix (Realtek High Definition)
the channels are: 2 (Stereo)

In 1.3.13, the playback device is: MME Speakers (Realtek High Definition)
the playback device is: MME Stereo Mix (Realtek High Definition)
the channels are: 2 (Stereo)

The host isn't listed in 1.26, so I don't know whether that is the issue.

Changing the host in 1.3.13 or the devices doesn't fix the problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
-Mike

This sounds like an odd problem.
Could you be more descriptive about "nothing works". If you import a know to be good audio file, doe it import correctly? (does its waveform appear in a new track?) When you press Play, what happens? Any error message?

There are no error messages upon trying to play the file.

Upon opening the program, there is an error message:

" Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:Program FilesAudacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)audacity.exe

R6034
An application has made an attempt to load the C runtime library
incorrectly.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

However, this error message was present when the sound worked.

Loading songs is fine, and the waveforms look normal. They will 'play', ie, the marker will move across the waveform, but there's no sound at any point during the song.

Are you using Windows 7?
If so, try changing the compatibility mode to Vista or XP. http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Windo ... _or_launch

I'm using Windows Vista.

I have a USB external hard drive connected, but nothing else.

The other host option is Windows DirectSound
The other options for playback are Microsoft Sound Mapper - Output and Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definiti.
The other options for recording are Microsoft Sound Mapper - Input and Microphone (Realtek High Defini.

I assume it's supposed to say (Realtek High Definition), but it doesn't.

Could the issue be something to do with the fact the names of the options do not match the device names exactly, or is that irrelevant?

Let me know, thanks
-Mike

That may just be that the default size of the text box is too small for the full name.
If you're looking in the Device Toolbar, the toolbar can be made bigger by grabbing the end of the toolbar with the mouse and dragging it.

I don't use Windows myself, but perhaps something here can help: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Mixer ... es#vistacp

Well, I checked that and everything was it needed to be.

I even uninstalled that Audacity 1.3 and reinstalled it, but the problem was the same as before.

Could the problem lie with how the program recognises the devices, perhaps?
