When I open Audacity (stable and unstable) and try to record i get the following message.
"Error opening sound device. Check device preferences and project sample rate and try again."

I checked both audacity and device preferences and still get the message i tried every sample rate and still get the message.

I am using a M-Audio Jamlab which is basically a guitar to usb converter.
I am runing my guitar trough a wah pedal and amp and sending the amp to the converter.

I have tried many different settings and still get error message. :oops:

This is one of the killer problems, especially Audacity 1.2 and especially under Windows. That combination saves its preferences and settings in The Dreaded Windows Registry. If something goes wrong, you need to be a programmer to fix it.

Ever run Microsoft RegEdit from the DOS Command Line? Don't.

The last time my machine did that, Audacity had taken it upon itself to change its preferences to multi-channel instead of stereo. That was an easy fix.

Just knowing what a pain this particular problem is, I personally would install and use Audacity 1.3. 1.3 has an actual configuration file that you can touch and feel and manage if something goes wrong. You can have 1.2 and 1.3 safely on your machine at the same time as long as you never launch both.

Then, open up the Windows Sound Recorder and see if that works. Forget Audacity for a while.

Windows Sound Recorder
Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment

Audacity is a complete slave to the computer. If Windows can't do it, Audacity will never fly.
