First time and stuck!

Hi all

Sorry for the stupid question but I am new to Audacity and terrible with computers too! :x

I want to transfer cassettes to audio and I have opened Audacity for the first time and gone to 'Save Project as' - I've named my file and now want to start recording but one of the steps in the instructions on Wiki is to change the Meter Toolbar (should be red and green) but mine is always grey. I've ensured that the 'Enable Meter Toolbar' is ticked.

I guess I am doing something silly......?

I would really appreciate any help

Many thanks

Mark

Hi - thanks for your quick reply

Not yet - I've not tried to start recording until I have the settings right, and I thought the meter tool was key to this?

Thanks

Mark

The meter toolbar is certainly a useful tool for setting up your recording - I was just unclear about what was working and what was not working.

Go to the "Windows Mixer" application - you can usually open this by double clicking, or right clicking, on the loudspeaker icon next to the system clock. Find the "Record" settings, and ensure that the recording input that you want to use is enabled.

If you are on Vista, read this: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php? ... s_Vista_OS

If still no joy, try installing Audacity 1.3.4 or 1.3.5 (I prefer 1.3.4 on Windows) - they are both available from the main Audacity web site. Audacity 1.3.x has many improvements, is easier to troubleshoot, and sometimes just works when 1.2.6 does not.
