audio position aka time codes

Using Audacity 1.2.6 and Windows Vista. Audacity newbie. Very simply, I do not see a display of time codes as I play my recorded audio narration file. Someone is going to be helping me edit the file and I need to supply them with time codes. I cannot find info on "time codes" in the documentation. My editor sent me a capture of the bottom of his Audacity window that has "Audio Position" at the bottom showing hours/mins/secs. I don't have this same panel. He says it's the "Selection Toolbar" but I don't seem to have it when I click on my View menu (it only shows Control, Edit, Mixer, and Meter toolbars). Thanks for helping me to find this much needed display.

Using Audacity 1.2.6 and Windows Vista.

Audacity 1.2 is unstable on Windows Vista. Install Audacity 1.3.


Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.

Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...

You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

Also, Audacity doesn't directly support SMPTE TimeCode®. The best you can do is the timeline time at the top of the edit window. You can set Labels (Control-B) anywhere you wish and even type notes into them and use them to mark edit points (but not be edit points. Audacity does not support edit markers).

They're magnetic or sticky and your cursor will stick to them.. Read your exact position from the Selection Start Window. You can change that default readout to get better accuracy.

I don't know if the label track goes with an Audacity Project. I need to experiment.

Label tracks do indeed form part of the Audacity project and are stored with the project when the project is Saved

@jady - just be aware that Audacity projects are quite complex and sending them to others can be difficult if you don't know what you are doing. This page from the 1.3 manual should help you understand the project structure and how to move them: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Projects

The Selection Toolbar is only in Audacity 1.3.x and not in Audacity 1.2.x
