Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

Periodic record glitches

Post by soundgeek » Sun Aug 31, 2008 4:50 pm

I've just installed an Ion USB turntable on my 1GHz Win98SE machine. I eventually found all the drivers. The motherboard has USB2 and the drivers are there to support it. Win98 finds the USB deck fine & it all looks like it is working.

Audacity 1.2.6 came on a CD with the deck and that installed fine.

I tried a recording, but every few seconds I get a sound glitch/distortion which is still there on play-back. I tried turning off software sound play-through, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

The recording files seem to be stored in 1M chunks and the period of the problems seems similar to the creation of these files. Maybe this is a Win98SE problem to do with the disk drivers.

Or perhaps there is a buffer-fill problem in memory?

Would Audacity benefit from a PIF file to launch it? If so what parameters should I set?

Any help appreciated :)

<<<Would Audacity benefit from a PIF file to launch it?>>>

Audacity would benefit from unplugging the USB cable and leaving it off. Once these turntables start generating garbage, it's all over.

This was written for a Mac, but the idea is there. If you have a PC Laptop, chances are you don't have a high level Line-In on your machine, so this solution will not be available to you.

Thanks for the post.

This doesn't look promising! :(

Try stopping all un-necessary background tasks - including scheduled ones. And try either stopping your virus checker (disconnect from t'interweb and any LAN first though - or try just setting your virus checker to ignore all files with .aup and .au extensions - your virus checker may be causing interrupts as each little .au file is created and the .aup is updated,
