I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and am using Audacity 1.2.6. When I try to download the LAME MP3 plugin, I am told it is not compatible with Windows 7. How do I solve this problem without downloading the 1.3 beta version?

1.3.13 is tge recommended version for W7.

1.2 is now ancient and doesn't work well on many newer platforms.

Although 1.3.13 is officially still a Beta release it is no very mature and stable. There are two persistent but hard to find bugs which are currently the major blockage to getting a release candidate for 2.0 from the 1.3.x series.

This still has not solved my problem. When researching the 1.2.6 version I noted that Windows 7 does not support the mp3 plugin. I have downloaded the 1.3.13 version and then tried to download the mp3 plugin. Supposedly the plugin was loaded into my computer but when I checked the exact pathway to it, it appeared that it did not download. Do I have to have a song loaded in version 1.2.13 and then try to download the plugin for it to work?

Please make sure you downloaded Audacity 1.3.13 Unicode for Windows 7 from us:

There is no 1.2.13 version.

There is no MP3 plug-in. It is a library file (lame_enc.dll). Please follow the instructions here to install it:

If Audacity has problems recognising lame_enc.dll in "Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity on Windows.exe", right-click over the following link:
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/software/lame_enc.dll

Then choose "Save Target As" or "Save Link As" and save it to "C:Program FilesLame for Audacity" if you are on 32-bit Windows 7 or "C:Program Files (x86)Lame for Audacity" if you are on 64-bit Windows 7. You already created one of those "Lame for Audacity" folders when you ran "Lame v3.98.3 for Audacity on Windows.exe". You may have to click in the list in the left of the file save window to navigate to the correct place.

If you do not know if you are on 64-bit Windows, click the Windows globe bottom left, right-click over "Computer", choose "Properties" and look for "System type" in the window that pops up.

Accept any prompts to replace the old file with the new one. Then try exporting an MP3 again (to do that you must have some audio in the Audacity window).
