Hi,
Can someone explain to me how to insert markers? I'd like to select a chunk of my track. Seems like the easiest way to do it would be to zoom in on the two outer edges of the portion that I want to select, mark them, then select the region afterwards. Is this possible in Audacity? Or, do I need to do as I have been doing...zoom in on one spot, click, zoom out, highlight region, and zoom in again on the other end of region (which is very tedious because the outer edge of the highlight doesn't stay centered when I zoom in).

Audacity doesn't have "Markers" -- I and O keys like a video editor. It does have Labels and they can be used for some of the jobs Markers do.

Find one edit point and press Control-B. You should get a new track with a label in it. You can print inside that label if you wish, but that's a legacy function if all you want is a cut point.

Place the other one. The labels are sticky or magnetic and it's a simple matter to drag-select your segment and Do Things to it. There are also "Region Labels" and I don't know much about those.

If any of these tools fail or are not available, you need to stop using Audacity 1.2.

the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

You might also find that the auto scrolling function will drive you nuts while you're editing. It's one of the first things I turn off when I install Audacity new.

Audacity Preferences > Tracks > [ ] Update... (de-select)

Unless you have a very old computer I would recommend that you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.13

In Audacity the "markers" are called "labels".

You may not need to use labels. If you have a wheel mouse then you can zoom in and out by holding down the Ctrl key and turning the mouse wheel. The zoom will be centred on the mouse pointer position. More information about ways to make and adjust a selection: http://manual.audacityteam.org/man/Audacity_Selection

What I normally do is to zoom out (Ctrl+Mouse Wheel), then make the selection approximately. Then zoom in on one end and adjust that end precisely (Shift + Click and drag). Then zoom out and back in on the other end and adjust that.
