Audacity 1.2.x is now obsolete. Please use the current Audacity 2.1.x version.

The final version of Audacity for Windows 98/ME is the legacy 2.0.0 version.

can I zoom into highlighted region without movement?

Post by drumphil2 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 4:44 am

I'm wishing I could zoom in on a highlighted region without having having the region move to the left or right. If I click on a spot and zoom in the spot where I clicked remains centering so I can quickly zoom in as far as I want to go. But, when I've highlighted a region and I try to zoom in on the outer edge of that highlight it doesn't stay centered. It quickly moves left or right off my computer screen within 2 zoom clicks. Is there a way to keep the edge of the highlight centered?

Try turning auto scrolling off.

Audacity Preferences > Tracks > [ ] Update Display... (de-select)

I have an awful time precision editing with that turned on. It's much easier when the timeline doesn't shift around underneath to "help" you.

This is probably only available in Audacity 1.3 which is where you should be anyway.

Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.

Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...

http://audacityteam.org/download/

You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

I don't remember if this works in Audacity 1.2 or not, but it works in Audacity 1.3.13
Hold down the Ctrl key and hover the pointer over the part that you want to zoom in on. Don't click.
Turn the mouse wheel and you can zoom in or out, centred on the pointer position.

Steve, thanks that sounds promising, however, I don't know what you mean by "turn the mouse wheel."

Do you have a wheel mouse? (a mouse with a scroll wheel)

When using Audacity I find the scroll wheel invaluable.
You can also use it to scroll left and right along a track by holding down the Shift key while using the mouse.
It's also really good when browsing the Internet as it will scroll pages up and down rather than having to drag that little bar on the right side of the page.
