I'm using beta version 1.3.
I just had my laptop wiped and reloaded with Windows XP. Everything seems to be working very well.
I can "start monitoring" and the record bars show a signal. If I record something, I can play it back and hear it fine.
However, when I "start monitoring" I cannot hear the program material through my speakers, only if I record it and then play it back will sound come out. I've checked the device settings and I'm using the same settings as before. I've tried many different device combinations to no avail.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Re: No playback sound while monitoring
My mouth keeps trying to form the words: "Why did you have your computer wiped?"
We should start by installing Audacity 1.3. We'll take from there.
Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.
Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...
http://audacityteam.org/download/
You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.
Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.
If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

What are you recording and how are you recording it? (for example, "I'm recording an acoustic guitar using a Logitec USB desktop microphone").

Re: No playback sound while monitoring
I had it wiped out and the OS (Windows XP) re-installed because my machine was becoming sluggish. I download lots of stuff and install lots of programs. I have a very good anti-virus program installed and never had a virus or any malware that I could find but my brother recommended it. He wipes and re-installs his machine(s) about twice a year. My laptop seems to be running tip top right now.
I have what I believe is the latest version of Audacity 1.3, downloaded from CNET about three days ago.
I am using a Rega P3 turntable and an NAD PP 3i analog to digital converter. This set up was working great before XP was re-installed. Now, as I said in my earlier post, I cannot listen while monitoring the program. I get sound only after recording something and then playing it back.
Any help is appreciated.

Re: No playback sound while monitoring
Actually, I just found the solution while re-reading the manual.
Go to "Edit" > "Preferences" > "Recording" then tick the "Software Playthrough" box.
I knew it was just a simple setting. Thanks to all who looked in here.

Re: No playback sound while monitoring
We do rather wish you'd get Audacity from the official download site. This is the same site you should get the add-ons like lame and FFMpeg. You may find the add-ons don't exactly match the Audacity you got from a different site.downloaded from CNET about three days ago.

Yes, that setting will give you speakers listening to whatever comes in. However. They will be slightly late. If all you're doing is listening to records or cassette conversions, nobody is ever going to know or care. If you decide to do voice-overs or overdubbing and critically editing tracks, the delay may easily drive you crazy.

Thank you for the link. If I need any add-ons the future, I will go there.
The work I do is rather simple compared to what some folks here do. Therefore, I find if I carefully read the manuals I can usually accomplish what I need to do.
Thanks very much for this most excellent program!
