unwanted changes when changing pitch

Post by Ehni » Sun Sep 04, 2011 8:53 pm

When I make a selection and change its pitch, its duration is also slightly altered, although according to the edit menu this is not supposed to happen. When I input the pre-change duration time in "change tempo" to restore it, a small interval of silence (also undesired) is included at the end. Suggestions, anyone? Thanks.

"Change Pitch" and "Change Tempo" are "Time stretching" effects.
Time stretching is difficult to do as it involves chopping the audio up into tiny little pieces, spacing them out according to the time stretch settings, then glueing them seamlessly back together again. To achieve this, all sorts of compromises have to be made and it is by nature an imprecise effect.

In Audacity 1.3.13 there is an additional new effect called "Sliding Time Scale / Pitch Shift...". This effect performs "time stretching" using a more advanced algorithm for higher quality. The compromise here is that it is a lot slower than the other Change Pitch effect.
