Cannot change recording source

I have recently downloaded audacity on my new computer, which has vista and a Realtek AC '97 sound card. My problem is that I cannot change the source to record from such as in line, microphone, etc. I was told the drop down menu wouldn't appear for vista and I had to go to edit>preferences>Audio I/O. I have done this and tested each option and my mic (which worked fine on my last computer) and yet, nothing can be recorded on any source setting. I have uninstalled and reinstalled audacity and I have made sure my drives were up to date. Any suggestion would be welcomed.
