Well not quite "Abandon Hope". There is a little utility for resetting most of Audacity 1.2.x registry settings to safe settings.

Go to http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacitydl.html
Scroll to the bottom of the page and right-click over "Audacity reset Preferences .reg file for Windows". Save this .reg file to your drive, then double-click it and click "yes" when asked if you want to add the information to the Registry. Note this will reset most of your Audacity Preferences to safe default values, in addition to setting the language to English.

The other option is to try Audacity 1.3 which has many advantages over the rather old 1.2 version.

I would suggest resetting the Audacity preferences, then running Audacity without opening any VOIP programs and seeing if Audacity functions correctly. As Koz has said, VOIP applications will often take over the sound system so as to provide bidirectional audio from packet-switched networks. Unfortunately this frequently causes compatibility problems with other audio programs.

I'm having a very similar problem. Audacity seems to record 2x as fast, making everything I say slow and at a lower pitch. This also happens with ventrilo, even when started up separately. On the other hand, it doesn't happen with microsoft sound recorder or teamspeak (sound records just fine).

I really have no idea what's going on. I'm just getting frustrated, and I hope someone has some solution (installing the registry file didn't work).

Any time you install multiple sound programs on your computer, they're going to try and load their own software and drivers. Somebody is going to win and in your case, Ventrilo and Audacity lose.

Skype and Ventrilo are toxic for different reasons. Skype takes over the machine and to heck with everybody else. Ventrilo loads custom, multi-channel, surround sound drivers. Have a happy day.

Audacity is expecting to record one microphone on a simple computer and export a sound file. Nothing else.

You might consider haunting the podcast forums and see what combinations work and which ones don't. We have you down that your combination doesn't.
