Anyone know how to edit an M4R file?
I downlodaed the Audacity program hoping it wolud allow me to edit some of the m4r files I already have? But it won't recognize the M4R files even if I try and shortcut by changing the extension to to aac, mp3, or mp4. I was hoping it would not be necessary to convert back to something, then edit as I need, and then convert to m4r again? But I sure wish I could do an edit (just cutting some parts out and shortening it) without converting all twice again. I even tried the raw import but even though it brings the audio in, the audio is messed up.
If anyone knows a way to do it in Audiacity (or - excuse my cursing - another program), I'd appreiciate the help!
Thanks!

Try renaming them to AAC, and use Super (free) or another suitable converter (possibly FooBar2000 - also free) to a format that Audacity supports (such as WAV).

Hey steve the fiddle, I apprecaite your idea and had done that, BUT had to convert to aac, back to mp3 then edit and then rename to aac and put into itunes, then pull out and name it an mp4 again. Whew, I was hoping someone here might suggest something that would allow me to edit the mp4 without going through all that?

Re: Anyone know how to edit an M4R file?
Audacity does not support advanced compressed filetypes like MP4, so the best you can do is two steps--and that's just to get it into Audacity. I would totally convert it to something uncompressed like WAV or AIFF, so editing and show management doesn't make the sound quality any worse.
Of course, the show is going to get enormously larger when you do that. That's the down side of getting used to really small file sizes. You can't edit those small files.

It's not actually that bad. You just need to convert from M4R/AAC to WAV, do your editing and convert back to M4R/AAC. You will need a 3rd party converter for the conversions (SUPER / FooBar2000 / iTunes?)madmac wrote: had to convert to aac, back to mp3 then edit and then rename to aac and put into itunes, then pull out and name it an mp4 again.

Re: Anyone know how to edit an M4R file?
Koz, You got that right. The mp4 file went from 171k to 1,268K, and that was without any editing. Luckily it went back down to about 174K after putting it back through the routine to get it back into ringtones on iTunes. But I'll bet I got some trash in it during the back and forth routine. At least I can edit the long mp4's, but losts of hoops to jump through. Again wish this could be done in one program.
Thanks

Re: Anyone know how to edit an M4R file?
Steve, yes change extension to aac, then pull into a conversion program (I have super) to a wave, then into the editor audiacity, then back to super to save as a mp3, then put it into itunes music and convert to an aac, pull out to explorer to change the extension to mp4, and wala the ringtone is back ready for sync to iphone. Just a hop skip and jump right? Have we gotten spoiled with tools or what? Guess I should just be happy that I can at least make a rigntone that iphone will accept. Not long ago that was on the wish list. I'm sure someone will come up with one which includes mp4's in the near future. I just need to be patient.
Re: Anyone know how to edit an M4R file?
Why do you need to use MP3? Why not import the WAV into iTunes and convert into AAC? Can't iTunes do that?madmac wrote:then into the editor audiacity, then back to super to save as a mp3,
The problem with many of he formats that get requested is that they have restrictive licensing terms.

Wav or MP3, either one works. Yes I understand the licensing and appreciate their delima.
