ION LP2 Flash with Audacity - No sound

I've been trying for ages to get my ION LP2 Flash record player to work in conjunction with Audacity.
Surface sound from the turntable can be heard, but no sound from my loudspeakers with the USB lead connected between my turntable and computer.
I've read in another thread of another user being recommended up to upgrade to a more recent version of Audacity, but it's Beta, so not fully mastered, but with that version or the previous version, I'm at a loss as to why I'm getting no sound, and with all the computer and Audacity settings available, I'm completely stuck if I have all the settings set up correctly and how to finally achieve sound.
I have Windows Vista with an Intel Pentium 4 processor. If there are any other technical details you require, please let me know.
Some things I've noticed are:
In Audacity, "Edit" - "Preferences", the Recording Device is completely blank and the Microphone section on the right - It's greyed in.
All the Playback devices are working, but in the Recording devices, only the USB Audio Codec Microphone is working, the others are disabled or not plugged in.
The ION record player is the only device I've ever had that won't work as a plug and play.

I've since found out that the record player won't work just to playback sound, Audacity has to be recording a record, but even then, no matter what I do, the sound remains silent.
The Audacity's Mixer Toolbar settings are greyed in, so I can't adjust any of the settings, of which the Left and Right controls appear to be set to maximum level.
When I clicked on "Record", I get this:
Error
Error while opening sound device. Please check the input device settings and the project sample rate.
In "Interface" - I ticked "Always allow playing", and in "Sound" - "Playback Devices" - "Speakers - USB Audio Codec" the default, which made other sounds (like iPlayer or Youtube etc) silent. It still makes no difference.
There is also an option to update Audio drivers, but I'm finding all this very confusing.
However, the Audacity Project Rate button is set correctly to 44100 Hz.
Is there a fault in the ION recordplayer or Audacity?, or if not,
What is causing a prevention of sound? and what do I need to do to rectify it?
