removing voice from mp3

Hi,
I tried the Vocal Remover and Knokout, but both left a kind of faint echo of the voice. I really did not know what I was doing, so poor results might be expected. The tracks are not identical. I'd appreciate any help.
Thanks,
..... john

That happens when a producer adds stereo echo to a singer to make them sound better. It's very common ... and permanent. Another failure mode is MP3 and other types of compression. MP3 sometimes scrambles stereo imaging and that kills Vocal Removal. Even when you make a perfect WAV sound track like this one...

Some slight amount of old voice will remain. Digital files are representations of reality and there is always some approximation and guesswork.

Thanks Koz,
So ..... am I right in assuming that there's nothing else that can be done with this file?

Vocal Removal in Audacity 1.3.13 has some settings you can try. Vocal Removal in Audacity 1.2 either worked or it didn't.

Audacity 1.2 is very old and no longer supported,
patched, corrected, or updated. Audacity 1.2 can
be unstable on newer computers.

Download and install the latest Audacity 1.3 from here...

http://audacityteam.org/download/

You can install both audacity 1.2 and Audacity 1.3 on
the same computer, but only use one at a time.

Audacity 1.2 will not open projects made on Audacity 1.3.

If you use MP3 or some of the more modern audio
compression formats, get Lame and FFMpeg software
from the same web site. Do not use older software
or software from other web sites, even though they
may have the same names.

Hi Koz,
Yes..... I started out with version 1.2 but swiched to 1.3.13 to get the built in version of 'Vocal Remover'. For some reason I couldn't find it in 1.2's 'effects', or just didn't see it. However, I was able to follow the instructions in one of the posts on this forum, that told me to how to do vocal removal manually. Regardless, the result was the same.... both left this 'echo' that I was telling you about.
Thanks again for all you help. I appreciate it.
