Changing pitch down causes crashing...

First let me preface my question with the following: I have used Audacity 1.2.6 for almost a year editing my podcast and I've never had the issues I'm having today. That said:

I'm in the process of editing a sound file that I recorded right in Audacity and I am having some issues. The sound file is less than 18 seconds long, with multiple layered tracks of virtually the same content. The issue I am having comes when I try to change pitch on one of the layered tracks. I seem to be able to change the pitch up, but every time I change pitch down, the program freezes and has to close. Other effects, such as changing the tempo also seem to cause this problem.

Any ideas? I've already re-installed the program to no effect and restarted my machine.

How far are you changing the pitch down?

I would suggest you click above the mute/solo buttons to select the track, then File > Export Selection as WAV. Then you can close that track using [X] and try importing the WAV and applying the effect.

If it crashes too, import the WAV into a new project, run the effect, export as WAV then import that WAV into the original project.
