recording echo problem

i have everything set up properly, i think. but when i go to record guitar, i hear an echo in the headphones, and it overlaps but it doesnt get recorded. is there any way to avoid this?

Probably not, for several reasons.
How is the guitar connected to the computer -- and what's the computer? Like: Win7 Dell Dimension Laptop.

i have it plugged into the line jack, and my computer was built, windows xp, amd processer

If it's enabled, turn off "Software Playthrough". If you're using Audacity 1.2.x it's somewhere in "Edit menu > Preferemces", but I would recommend that you upgrade to Audacity 1.3.13 and then you'll find it near the bottom of the Transport menu.
